Woman charged with calling in shooting threat to N.J school

A 28-year-old Atlantic County woman was arrested at her home after authorities said she called in a shooting threat to a school in Cape May County on Thursday.

The Corbin City resident was charged with creating a false public alarm, State Police said.

She called in the threat to Upper Township Elementary School at about 9:40 a.m, leading school officials to call for a shelter-in-place order that lasted about 90 minutes. Investigators determined there was no actual threat, according to State Police.

The woman has previous charges in the past 10 years for obstruction, trespass and criminal mischief, according to court records.

The alleged threat to Upper Township Elementary was the latest in a series of threats that have forced lockdowns, closures and evacuations at schools in New Jersey and around the nation since the start of the new school year. Some of the threats have resulted in arrests of students who allegedly posted threatening messages online.
