BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Federal money is coming down the pike for a new research center at the University of Vermont.

Nearly $3 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology will kick off the new Climate Measurements Center of Excellence at UVM to study how climate change impacts communities nationwide.

The university says its own researchers, along with national scientists and experts, will measure how climate affects water resources, food systems and human health.

The school says local measurements are needed for communities to prepare for extreme climate events and the new center will address a lack of standards in regional climate change measurement.
