University of Michigan Health West in Wyoming, Michigan, recently had a special visitor in their professional building lobby. Jake, a 3-legged Golden Lab mix, and Blaze, a King Charles Spaniel, were on site to bring smiles to patients and staff alike.

Furry Friends Lift Spirits

U of M Health West regularly invites therapy dogs from the West Michigan Therapy Dog Program to boost mental and emotional well-being. These certified therapy dogs visit different hospital buildings once a month, serving as a valuable tool for improving health. Patients and staff eagerly anticipate these visits, as interacting with the dogs is known to have a positive impact.

Volunteers Make a Difference

Jennifer DeVries, from UM Health West Volunteer Services, highlighted the heartwarming effect of the therapy dogs: "When you see a dog, they're always so happy to have you come up and pet them. So, it kind of not only melts your heart, it kind of just melts those worries away. That's what we want for our staff, and then also for our patients." All the dogs and handlers participating in the program generously volunteer their time to spread joy at the hospital.

Therapy dogs have proven to be a beloved addition to UM Health West, bringing comfort and happiness to all who encounter them. The program continues to make a difference in the lives of patients and staff, promoting overall well-being and positivity within the hospital's walls.
