Lincoln, Nebraska - The annual Lincoln Tour for Rewilding Urban Environments (Lincoln TRUE) is back on September 29, inviting the community to explore a dozen homes that have transformed their traditional lawns into vibrant ecosystems.
Embracing Nature in Urban Spaces
This year's tour, scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 29 from 1-6 p.m., offers a unique opportunity to witness how everyday people are championing nature and working towards restoring urban environments. Jenn Duerr, a member of the Lincoln TRUE planning committee, highlighted the innovative approaches that participants have taken in reimagining their landscapes.
Redefining Landscaping Norms
Participants have moved away from traditional fescue lawns, covering an area equivalent to the size of Texas, which often rely on harmful chemicals and contribute to shallow root systems. Instead, the homes on the tour showcase environmentally friendly alternatives that promote biodiversity, provide wildlife habitats, and enrich the soil.
Celebrating Sustainable Gardening
During the tour, attendees can engage in various activities such as picking up free plants, enjoying live music, painting, acquiring starter garden kits for fall planting, and learning about native plants. The Lincoln High School J Street circle will have information tables, free plants, and maps for the tour from 1-6 p.m.
Inspiring Environmental Action
Allie Christianson, another member of the planning committee, emphasized the tour's aim to inspire individuals to make positive environmental changes by transforming their yards into dynamic, natural spaces.
Rewilding Urban Spaces
The tour includes visits to unique locations such as the Lincoln High Community Healing Garden, Greta's Secret Garden, and the Grateful Growers' Pollinator Garden. Additional locations are continually being added to the tour. For those interested in joining the tour and accessing a detailed map of the event, they can visit the Rewilding Lincoln page on Facebook or Instagram.
Connect with Nature in Your Own Yard
Through Lincoln TRUE, community members are encouraged to connect with nature in their own yards and contribute to the larger ecosystem. By embracing sustainable gardening strategies and redefining traditional landscaping norms, individuals can play a significant role in supporting the environment.
Join the Movement
Members of the Lincoln TRUE planning committee, including Allie Christensen, Julie Diegel, Jenn Duerr, Pat England, Micha Leamer, and Molly Phemister, are dedicated to promoting sustainable practices and encouraging the community to join the movement.
