Tips to Stay Safe from Flames and Foodborne Illnesses this Fourth of July

Protect yourself from flames and foodborne illnesses this holiday
Besides fireworks and the heat, there's another hidden danger on July 4th: staying safe at the grill.

Important Safety Tips for Grilling:
Firefighter Dylan Mathews emphasizes the key precautions to take while grilling. He advises against using gasoline to start the grill fire, ensuring charcoals are burnt down properly, and keeping the grill away from any nearby structures to prevent accidents. Mathews also stresses the importance of not leaving the grill unattended to avoid potential fire hazards.

In case of an emergency, it is recommended to have a water hose nearby or to immediately call 911 for assistance.

Preventing Foodborne Illness:
Calvin Knight from The Station Sports Bar and Grill warns about the food hazards that come with the Fourth of July celebrations. Apart from grilling safety, he highlights the risks of foodborne illnesses due to high temperatures and picnic-style food handling.

Knight advises against cross-contamination by using separate gloves for different meats and ensuring proper hand hygiene to prevent the spread of bacteria. He stresses the importance of not leaving food out for more than 30 to 45 minutes due to fast bacteria growth.

To ensure food safety, Knight recommends keeping cold foods below 60 degrees Fahrenheit and avoiding leaving perishable items exposed to heat for too long.

By following these safety guidelines, you can enjoy a safe and happy Fourth of July celebration.
