Canine Comfort: A New Approach to Healthcare Stress Relief
"
Therapy dogs have been shown to have a positive impact on the emotional well-being of healthcare workers, a recent study reveals. The study, conducted at two surgical and two intensive care units in the Midwest, found that therapy dogs not only lifted the spirits of health care professionals but also reduced emotional exhaustion and job stress.

A Warm Welcome
Lead investigator Beth Steinberg of Ohio State University's Center for Integrative Health shared, "We brought the dogs to the units and many times we had staff in tears sitting with the dogs, telling them about their day. For the most part, people have an affinity to a non-judgmental, warm, furry animal that can come and just sit with them and listen. Dogs don't care what you look like, how you're feeling that day; they just know that when you need them, they're there."

Buckeye Paws Program
Steinberg, who is also the co-founder of Buckeye Paws, initiated the therapy dog program to support the mental and emotional well-being of staff at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. The program, which started in March 2020, has been praised for its positive effects on overtaxed healthcare professionals, especially during the ongoing pandemic.

Study Results
In a study involving 64 healthcare workers, therapy dog interactions led to immediate improvements in mood and reductions in stress, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and burnout. The brief sessions, held three times a week over eight weeks, allowed staff members to freely interact with certified therapy dogs.

Expanding Reach
Following the success of the Buckeye Paws program, therapy dog assistance is now extended to students, faculty, and staff at Ohio State University. With 29 dog-handler teams in place and more undergoing training, the program aims to continue offering support and comfort to those in need.

In conclusion, therapy dogs have emerged as a valuable resource in alleviating stress and promoting well-being among healthcare workers. The unconditional love and companionship provided by these furry friends have made a significant difference in the lives of those working tirelessly to care for others."
