Teen fatally shot by 13-year-old boy in home on Syracuse’s North Side, police say

A shooting was reported Monday, Oct. 7, 2024 on Herbert Street. About 5 police cruisers and one crime scene van were on scene.

Syracuse, N.Y. — A 13-year-old boy fatally shot a 16-year-old Monday morning at a home on Syracuse’s North Side, police said.

The shooting was reported at about 11:35 a.m. at 309 Herbert St.

Dostdar Ali Khel was declared dead at the scene, Kieran Coffey, a spokesperson for the Syracuse Police Department, said Tuesday.

Coffey said a 13-year-old boy, who police did not identify, shot Alik Hel. The boy was found in the area of 709 First North Street and taken to the Public Safety Building, Youth Division, he said. He is being held at the Hillbrook Juvenile Detention Center pending arraignment.

The boy was charged with second-degree manslaughter and second degree-criminal possession of a weapon, Coffey said.

Police declined to release any more information about the shooting.

Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said the investigation is ongoing. He declined further comment since Family Court cases are handled by the county attorney’s office.
