Sunset High School's Bison Closet: Providing Hope, Food, and Clothing for Students and Community

High school students in Oak Cliff are making a difference in their community by ensuring that everyone is well-dressed and fed.

Empowering Students with Hope

Erika Bonilla, the community liaison at Sunset High School, has spearheaded the initiative of Bison Care Clothing Closet. The closet is stocked with a variety of items ranging from shoes, sweaters, and toiletries to formal dresses. According to Bonilla, the goal is to make sure that every student and family at Sunset High School has access to essential resources.

Prom and Homecoming Ready

Bonilla emphasizes the importance of students feeling confident and comfortable, especially during events like prom and homecoming. Thanks to the generous donations from a local bridal shop, over 200 students were able to choose their perfect dress for prom last year. This year, the remaining dresses are being offered to students for homecoming, allowing them to feel special and confident for the occasion.

A Helping Hand for Everyone

The Bison Closet is not just limited to formal wear, as it also accepts gently used dresses and provides casual clothing items for students and their families. Additionally, the closet serves as a food pantry, catering to the needs of students, teachers, staff, and even neighbors in the community.

Spreading the Message

Sunset senior Yeimi Rios has been instrumental in spreading the word about the Bison Closet through social media. Rios praises the impact of the closet, stating that it has helped numerous students and transformed Sunset High School into a safe haven for those in need.
