Summerville's Public Works Art Center Hosts Inaugural Block Party Celebrating Community Unity and Joy

Dear Editor
I am the Executive Director of Public Works Art Center in Summerville, a vibrant art space established in 2018 by nine longtime residents. Our goal was to create a place where art and community could thrive. After two years of hosting elegant galas for fundraising, we decided to switch to a more inclusive and fun event - a free, family-friendly block party. Thanks to the support of our board of directors, staff, and dedicated co-chairs Gretchen Cuddy and Sloane Strauss, this vision came to life on Saturday, Sept. 7.

A Day of Celebration:

The block party began with an Ashley Ridge drumline parade leading through the farmer's market, setting the festive tone for the day. West Richardson Street was closed off from Cedar Street to Montreux, with game tents and local businesses lining the road. Instead of food trucks, we encouraged attendees to support nearby restaurants. The stage showcased diverse performances, while colorful tents offered games and activities for all ages - all free of charge. Artists worked on a mural, and artisans displayed their crafts. Attendees enjoyed complimentary Puma's Italian Ice, Simply Treasures popcorn, and Beyond Basic lemonade. Inside, the SPARK Community Exhibition themed 'Joy' added to the vibrant atmosphere, with artists providing demonstrations throughout the day.

Gratitude to Supporters:

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our sponsors, including title sponsor REV Federal Credit Union and zone sponsor Atlas Tech, along with other supporters and funding from South Carolina Accommodations tax. Over 1,500 individuals attended the event, experiencing a day of joy and strengthening community ties. The dedication of over 50 volunteers ensured the event's success, showcasing true community spirit. We are grateful to all attendees, nonprofit partners, and those who embraced our vision.
In conclusion, the Public Works Art Center's inaugural block party was a celebration of unity, joy, and community spirit. We look forward to continuing to bring art and connection to Summerville in the years to come.
