Saving Lives: Project ADAM Drill Ensures Bettendorf Middle School is Prepared for Emergencies

From left, Emma McKinney, Brian Hansen, and Dave Kietzman collaborated to practice CPR and use an AED (automated external defibrillator) on a mannequin during a simulated emergency drill at Bettendorf Middle School in Bettendorf. The school, in partnership with the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital and Project ADAM: Iowa Heartland, is dedicated to becoming a 'Heart Safe School' by implementing effective emergency protocols.

Delegated Responsibilities During Emergencies

During the simulation, a designated staff member made crucial calls to 911 and guardians while another individual took detailed notes to ensure a coordinated response.

Importance of Prompt Response

Officer Brian Hanssen demonstrated chest compressions on the mannequin, emphasizing the critical need for rapid intervention during cardiac arrest. The goal is to use the AED within three minutes to maximize chances of survival.

Quick Action and AED Utilization

Staff at Bettendorf Middle School promptly applied an AED to the simulated cardiac arrest victim, highlighting the importance of having these devices readily available. The school is equipped with three AED units strategically placed throughout the premises.

Project ADAM’s Lifesaving Mission

Born out of a tragic incident involving Adam Lemel, Project ADAM focuses on increasing AED accessibility and providing training on their usage in public spaces. The program aims to empower individuals to respond effectively in life-threatening situations.

Efficiency and Preparedness Assessment

First responders demonstrated the use of an automatic CPR device, while post-drill discussions among staff and responders focused on response times and operational efficiency. The team utilized a comprehensive checklist to evaluate readiness and performance.

Positive Feedback and Encouragement

Brenda Haag, a coordinator from the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, commended the quick response time of the staff, noting their swift initiation of chest compressions. The drill highlighted the school's commitment to ensuring a safe and prepared environment.

In summary, the recent drill at Bettendorf Middle School underscored the importance of preparedness and effective emergency response. By working in collaboration with renowned medical institutions and programs like Project ADAM, the school aims to create a secure environment where swift actions can save lives.
