San Francisco and Oakland ranked among top US cities for vegans and vegetarians, says WalletHub

Two Bay Area cities have secured spots in the top 15 of a consumer site's rankings for the best cities for vegans and vegetarians.
San Francisco
has claimed the No. 7 position, while
Oakland
has landed at No. 13 on WalletHub's list of the most vegetarian-and-vegan-friendly cities in the United States. The personal-finance website unveiled its rankings on Tuesday in anticipation of
World Vegetarian Day
on Oct. 1 and
World Vegan Day
on Nov. 1. According to WalletHub, more than 15.7 million people in the U.S., or around 6% of adults, follow a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle. WalletHub's evaluation criteria for the rankings encompassed various factors, including the proportion of restaurants offering meatless options, the affordability of groceries for vegetarians, and the density of salad shops per capita. The top 20 cities include Los Angeles, CA; Orlando, FL; Portland, OR; San Diego, CA; Seattle, WA; Austin, TX; San Francisco, CA; Miami, FL; Phoenix, AZ; Tampa, FL; New York, NY; Washington, DC; Oakland, CA; Las Vegas, NV; Chicago, IL; Atlanta, GA; Madison, WI; Houston, TX; Sacramento, CA; and San Antonio, TX. One notable highlight from WalletHub's analysis is that San Francisco boasts the highest number of community-supported agriculture programs per population density. In the local Bay Area rankings,
Fremont
and
San Jose
were placed much lower on the list at No. 75 and No. 77, respectively.
