Red Hook's Harold Ickes Playground Transformed Into State-of-the-Art Skate Park

A new state-of-the-art skate park has been unveiled at Red Hook's Harold Ickes Playground, breathing new life into what was once a beat-up asphalt softball field. New Recreational Haven: The playground, which was previously underutilized, now boasts new ramps and bowls designed for skaters and BMX bikers. The $4.3 million project, funded by various city entities, was completed ahead of schedule and opened to the public in February. Grand Opening: Local skater Eric Hernandez excitedly inaugurated the park by skateboarding through a ribbon-cutting ceremony, officially marking the park's opening on July 2. Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue emphasized the importance of dedicated spaces for sports like BMX biking and skateboarding. Collaborative Design: The project, which began in 2017, involved collaboration with skateboarders and BMX bikers to bring their vision to life. In addition to new features, such as ramps and rails, the park now includes a bike repair station and air pumps. Enhanced Green Space: Non-skaters can enjoy a parkour space with safety surfacing, a climbing boulder, and refreshed greenery throughout the playground. The area also includes new benches, security lighting, and water bottle filling stations. Community Enjoyment: State Sen. Andrew Gounardes praised the transformation of the field into a vibrant space for recreation and outdoor activities. The revival of recreational facilities in Red Hook continues, with more renovations planned for ball fields and the recreation area. Future Plans: The city aims to establish itself as the 'skate capital of the East Coast' with plans for two new skate parks in different Brooklyn locations. The Brower Park skate park is set for a significant upgrade, while a 40,000-square-foot Brooklyn Skate Garden is in the works at Mount Prospect Park.
