The event saw a remarkable turnout with 119 teams from over 20 states competing for the prestigious title. Amy Mills from 17th Street Barbecue, the host of the cook-off, announced the Grand Champions and winners across various categories. The champions not only claimed bragging rights but also earned a chance to participate in renowned events such as the Kansas City Royal and the Jack Daniel’s draw, along with the World Steak Cook-off. An impressive sum of over $36,000 was awarded in prize money to the talented winners.

Diverse Competitions

The cook-off featured a range of competitions including the Fish, Wings, Chicken, Shoulder, Ribs, Brisket, and Whole Hog contests. These mouth-watering dishes were evaluated by esteemed organizations like the Memphis Barbecue Network (MBN) and the Kansas City Barbecue Society. Moreover, attendees were treated to exciting competitions like the Illinois Soybean Association's Field of Beans series, Doubleheader Steak Cook-off, and Tacos and Appetizers contests.

Honoring a Barbecue Legend

Amy Mills expressed her gratitude, stating that the event continues to honor the legacy of her late father, Mike Mills, fondly remembered as 'The Legend.' She highlighted that the Praise the Lard Cook-Off, which initially began as a community fundraiser, has now evolved into a highly anticipated culinary spectacle. The event not only showcases Murphysboro but also exemplifies the warm Southern hospitality synonymous with Southern Illinois.

Unique Awards

The winning teams were presented with special hand-blown glass apples crafted by the Douglass School Art Place in Murphysboro. Additionally, the Grand Champions received intricately carved chainsaw pigs from Southern Illinois Chainsaw Carving in Marion, Illinois.

The top accolades at the event included 'Ain't It The Life' winning the MBN Grand Champion title in the pork category, while 'The BBQ Bus' emerged victorious as the KCBS Grand Champion. A hearty congratulations to all the winners who showcased their exceptional skills and passion for barbecue!
