NSU Awarded $2M Grant to Increase Native American Nurses

Northeastern State University in Oklahoma has recently been granted $2 million to support Native American nurses seeking further education. With 14.2% of Oklahoma's population being Native American, the need for more tribal healthcare workers is evident.
Increasing Diversity in Healthcare
NSU aims to address the underrepresentation of tribal nurses in the healthcare field, where less than 1% of registered nurses identify as tribal. The grant will provide financial assistance to Native American nurses, covering expenses such as books, tuition, and living stipends.
Empowering the Native Community
Heidi Avery, a student studying to become a Physician's Assistant at NSU, emphasizes the importance of having healthcare providers who can relate to and effectively communicate with the native community. She believes that trust between patients and providers is crucial for quality healthcare.
Changing the Landscape
By investing in the education and support of Native American nurses, NSU is not only addressing the lack of diversity in healthcare but also empowering the native community to take charge of their healthcare needs.
