New Federal Regulations Ensure Air Traveler Protections and Refunds for 2024 Holiday Season

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has recently implemented new regulations to enhance the protection of air travelers in the United States. According to a report by US PIRG, complaints against airlines have surged by 29% in 2023, prompting the DOT to take action to address these concerns.

Enhanced Refunds and Customer Service

Under the new rules, air travelers can now expect hassle-free refunds, transparent upfront disclosures of baggage fees, 24/7 customer service availability, and a ban on family seating fees. These regulations are aimed at ensuring a seamless and stress-free travel experience for passengers.

Bill McGee, a senior fellow for aviation at the American Economic Liberties Project, emphasized that the new refund policies will be effective starting October 28, 2024, just in time for the upcoming holiday travel season. Passengers facing flight cancellations, whether due to controllable or uncontrollable reasons, are entitled to a cash refund without the need for extensive procedures or communication with airlines.

Baggage Fee Reimbursement

In cases where a checked bag is delayed for 12 hours or more on a domestic flight, passengers are eligible for a refund. Similarly, for international flights, if baggage arrives late between 15 to 30 hours based on the flight duration, a refund will be provided.

Family Seating Guarantee

Starting in 2025, airlines will be prohibited from charging families extra fees to ensure that children aged 13 or younger can sit beside their parents or adult companions. This regulation aims to foster a more family-friendly environment during air travel, with some airlines already pledging to offer complimentary family seating arrangements.

These new regulations signify a significant step towards enhancing consumer rights and ensuring a more transparent and reliable air travel experience for passengers across the country.
