New Balance Foundation Program at Roberts Farm: Teaching Kids Healthy Habits with Fit Kit

Wes Nugteren, a program management specialist funded by the New Balance Foundation, leads outdoor education at Roberts Farm Preserve, teaching kids about five health topics with tools from Fit Kit.

Exploring Healthy Habits

The program focuses on exercise, nutrition, stress, sedentary activities, and sleep for third and fourth-grade students. Students get to try new foods grown in the gardens, finding more enjoyment in trying new things they picked themselves.

Taste Testing Adventures

Cherry tomatoes were well-received, while celery with ranch dressing was not favored, and fresh dill surprised many with its taste and fragrance.

Combining Exercise and Mindfulness

The outdoor education activities at Roberts Farm Preserve aim to combine exercise with mindfulness for elementary school students. Through engaging experiences, these young learners are not only learning about health but also developing positive habits that will benefit them in the long run.
