West Nile-positive mosquitoes collected from Hammonton
Atlantic County officials have reported that additional mosquito samples collected from Hammonton have tested positive for the West Nile virus. The latest samples, collected from Pleasant Street West, were confirmed positive on Tuesday, according to the county Division of Public Health.
Previous Positive Samples
Prior samples collected from Hammonton that also tested positive for West Nile were found on Oak Avenue, West 15th Street, and Liberty Street, the county authorities stated. In response to the situation, the county Office of Mosquito Control conducted an aerial spray on September 3 and a ground spray on September 10 over various parts of Hammonton to help decrease mosquito populations and prevent the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses.
Precautionary Measures
West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through infected mosquitoes. To minimize the risk of exposure, the county recommends residents to use insect repellent, eliminate standing water on their properties, empty containers that can hold water such as buckets and bird baths, clean clogged gutters, and check and repair screen doors.
