Historic home in Palmer Woods Historic District catches fire
DETROIT – A massive fire engulfed the mansion that once belonged to a family that owned the Detroit Tigers and served as the namesake for Tiger Stadium.
Aerial footage at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, showed flames burning through the roof of the home near 7 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue in Detroit’s Palmer Woods Historic District.
No injuries have been reported. The homeowners were living in the guest house during renovations to the main home, Local 4 learned.
According to Historic Detroit, the home was built in the 1920s and owned by the family of Walter Briggs.
Briggs is a former owner of the Tigers and perhaps best known for renovating what was then Navin Field. The stadium was redeveloped and opened in 1938 as Briggs Stadium.
It would later be renamed Tiger Stadium.
The home has since passed to a new owner, Jerlando Jackson.
It’s not yet clear what caused the fire.
