Man's Close Encounter with Black Bear in Garage Leaves Him Unscathed: How He Handled the Situation

Man in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada was recently faced with a startling situation when he encountered a black bear in his garage while charging his electric vehicle.
Man Keeps His Composure
Video footage shows the intense moment when the bear locked eyes with the man, Alex Gold, before charging towards him. Despite the alarming situation, Gold remained calm and composed. He can be seen in the video repeatedly shouting "No" and clapping his hands as he carefully moved away from the bear. In a quick move to escape, Gold sought refuge inside his vehicle and closed the doors.
Unexpected Visitor
While the bear inspected Gold's car, a bear cub made an appearance in the frame, adding to the tension of the encounter. Gold resorted to honking the horn multiple times to deter the two bears. "I've encountered bears in the past, but never this closely," Gold shared on Instagram.
Understanding Black Bears
Biologist Dr. Lynn Rogers, who has extensively studied wild black bears for over 50 years, sheds light on the often misunderstood creatures. According to Rogers, black bears exhibit territorial behavior, and most attacks result from fear rather than aggression. He emphasizes that maintaining a safe distance is crucial in preventing conflicts with bears.
Safety Tips
If faced with a black bear, experts advise against playing dead. Instead, individuals should quickly seek refuge in a secure building or vehicle and, if necessary, defend themselves by striking the bear with force. Brown or Grizzly Bears, on the other hand, require a different approach, with individuals advised to play dead until the bear retreats. Bringing bear spray when venturing into bear habitats is recommended by the National Park Service to ensure personal safety.
