Lyon College Launches Craft Brewing Partnership with Local Restaurant in Historic Collaboration

Lyon College has taken a groundbreaking step by partnering with Polk & Paddle, a new private club in downtown Batesville, Arkansas. This partnership signifies a significant moment for Independence County, marking the inception of its first brewery post-Prohibition and introducing an innovative educational opportunity for Lyon College students.
Exciting Partnership with Polk & Paddle

Polk & Paddle, owned by Dustin and Tham Dayberry, is set to open its doors this month at 146 North 3rd Street, opposite the Independence County Library. The establishment will boast a pub-style menu and a variety of Arkansas-made beers on tap. In a groundbreaking move, Polk & Paddle will also rotate in-house ales, brewed on-site by Lyon College's brewing operations team.
Educational Brewing Program

Lyon College's brewing program, initiated four years ago under the guidance of Dr. Alexander Beeser, associate professor of biology, has laid the groundwork for this collaboration. Dr. Beeser, an accomplished home brewer, introduced a fermentation science class that has since become a popular course among students and the local community. Now, Lyon College students will gain practical brewing experience through this partnership.
A Vision Realized

Dr. Melissa Taverner, president of Lyon College, expressed her excitement about the partnership, stating that it merges education and entrepreneurship to create something truly remarkable. The brewing equipment, acquired through generous donations, will be housed at Polk & Paddle's lower level. Mac Harn, the brewing operations manager, will lead student interns, aged 21 and older, in the brewing process.
Community Collaboration

The Dayberrys, owners of Polk & Paddle, are delighted to fulfill their dream of bringing craft brewing to Batesville through this partnership. Dr. David Hutchison, Lyon College's VP for advancement, emphasized the importance of community support in bringing this project to fruition. The beers brewed at Polk & Paddle will feature the Lyon College brand and will be exclusive to the restaurant and surrounding entertainment district.
A Bright Future

While Lyon College will not offer beer for sale on campus due to local regulations, this collaboration marks an exciting new chapter for Batesville. Lyon College is eager to see the positive impact this venture will have on the college, students, and the wider community.
