Louisville's Historic Ballard Park Set for $1.3 Million Upgrade in Smoketown Revitalization Project

After years of neglect, Ballard Park in Louisville's Smoketown neighborhood is set to undergo a major transformation with a $1.3 million upgrade.
Revitalizing a Historic Park
The Parks Alliance of Louisville, in collaboration with local residents, Louisville Parks & Recreation, and Councilman Jecorey Arthur, unveiled the final design plans for the revamped Ballard Park. This historic park, established in 1919 for Black residents, has not seen any significant investment for over two decades.
Community-Driven Transformation
Thanks to the Parks For All Equitable Investment Action Plan, Ballard Park will soon feature amenities requested by the Smoketown community. The transformation was prompted by a tragic incident in 2021 when 17-year-old DeJuan Coward was fatally shot at the park. In response, the Smoketown Anti-Violence Coalition was formed to prioritize park improvements.
Future Enhancements
The new design concept by Gresham Smith includes play structures, shaded seating areas, a picnic pavilion, and more to cater to the community's needs. Louisville Parks & Recreation executive director Michelle King emphasized the importance of the project in making quality parks accessible to all residents.
Fundraising and Construction
The Parks Alliance is currently raising funds for the $1.3 million project, with groundbreaking set for early 2025 and completion expected by summer 2025. Councilman Arthur expressed excitement for the park's transformation, stating that Smoketown deserves a top-notch recreational space for current and future generations. This investment not only enhances the physical landscape but also contributes to the overall well-being of the community.
