Lights Out, DFW: Protecting Migratory Birds During Fall Migration

The fall season marks the beginning of the annual migration of birds over the North Texas sky, as billions of birds make their journey through Texas. From August 15 through November 30, the peak migration period is from October 14 to November 17.

The Lights Out Initiative
The National Audubon Society, Audubon Texas, and Texan by Nature have launched the Lights Out initiative to raise awareness and take action to protect migratory birds. By turning off lights at night, we can help prevent light pollution that can disorient birds.

Significance of Texas for Bird Migration
Texas plays a crucial role in bird migration, with nearly two billion birds passing through the state each fall and spring. Some birds travel thousands of miles, reaching speeds of up to 30 mph.

Challenges for Birds during Migration
Birds often migrate at night, and artificial lights from buildings can attract and confuse them, making them vulnerable to collisions. In the United States, 3.5 billion birds die from building collisions annually.

How You Can Help
It is essential for all Texans, whether businesses or residents, to turn off nonessential lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the fall migration season. By reducing light pollution, we can ensure the safety of migratory birds. Bird enthusiasts can track bird migration patterns on the BirdCast website.

Let's take part in protecting our bird population during this critical migration period, the Texas friendly way!
