Lake County's innkeepers tax revenue has seen a significant increase of more than $269,000 this year, thanks to a surge in visitation, reports the South Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau. The county has collected over $1.4 million in hotel taxes by the end of May, marking a considerable spike from the previous year.
A Boost in Visitation
South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority Board President, Andy Qunell, expressed excitement over the substantial growth, stating, "That's a huge increase. That's a big story." In 2022, Lake County raked in approximately $3.2 million in hotel tax revenue, predominantly during the bustling summer months. Qunell commended the tourism staff for their outstanding efforts in driving people to the area and promoting various events.
Driving Economic Impact
Lake County's tourism industry now stands at a staggering $1.24 billion annually, making it the second most popular county in the state. Qunell emphasized the collaborative approach taken by the staff in partnering with communities across Lake County to boost visitation numbers. The region has witnessed a rise in visitation even outside the peak summer season, attributed partly to the hosting of numerous sporting events by SSCVA.
Positive Economic Implications
The surge in hotel tax revenue from visitors staying overnight has been noteworthy, increasing from $265,136 in March last year to $367,275 this March. Qunell credits the success to effective marketing strategies and a continuous stream of events organized in the county. He highlighted the economic impact generated by hotel stays, translating into spending at various local establishments. The increase in hotel tax revenue reflects only a fraction of the overall economic benefits accrued by the region. It signifies a broader positive impact on businesses such as Albanese, Byway Brewing, local restaurants, and attractions like Whoa Zone. The concerted efforts of all stakeholders involved have propelled Lake County's tourism sector to new heights, ushering in a prosperous era of growth and development.
