High Levels of Fecal Bacteria Detected in Six Swim Sites Across Eastern Carolina

Six swim sites in Eastern Carolina have recently been found to have high levels of fecal bacteria, failing the water-quality tests conducted by Sound Rivers.
Failed Sites:

-
Tar-Pamlico:
Havens Gardens in Washington and Cypress Landing in Chocowinity
-
Neuse:
Lawson Creek in New Bern, Upper Broad Creek at Black Beard Sailing Club, Slocum Creek in Havelock, and Cotton Patch Landing on Blounts Creek
According to Sound Rivers, the presence of elevated fecal bacteria in the water can pose health risks such as gastrointestinal illnesses and skin infections for both pets and humans. The organization also mentioned that several other sites are yet to undergo testing including Bonner's Point and Plum Point in Bath, Wright's Creek in Belhaven, and Rice Creek off the Bay River. Clay Barber, the program director of Sound Rivers, expressed concern over the recurring issues at problem sites like Slocum Creek and Havens Gardens. He pointed out that failing septic systems on a tributary of Slocum Creek are contributing to the water quality problems in Havelock. In light of these findings, Barber advised the public to be cautious when in doubt about water quality, suggesting to keep the head above water and to avoid any contact with open wounds.
