Heartbroken mother shares the tragic story of her son's plea for help that never arrived

On November 4 2022, Vicki McCormick received a message that shattered her world completely. The message was from her son Callum, and it was a heart-wrenching suicide note sent via WhatsApp. Callum was only 22 when he tragically ended his own life. Despite his desperate plea for help, the assistance he urgently needed never arrived.

A Cry for Help

Callum had reached out to a nurse, begging to be sectioned just a day before the fateful incident. However, he was informed that there were no available beds, and a mental health team would get in touch with him the next morning. The heartbreaking reality was that no assistance came in time to save Callum.

After waiting until 11 am without any response from the hospital, Callum made a final heart-wrenching gesture by sending a WhatsApp message to his mother at 11:13 am, expressing his love for her, his father, and the rest of the family. Tragically, by the time a member of the home-based treatment team reached Callum's house at 11:45 am, it was already too late.

A System Failure

Vicki, hailing from Wigan, firmly believes that her son was failed by the system as he had actively sought help from both his GP and specialty mental health teams. Despite being seen by a healthcare professional on October 19, the necessary actions were delayed. Callum's struggles intensified when his relationship ended on November 2, pushing him further into despair.

A Tragic Loss

Callum's mother spoke of the incredible bond they shared, highlighting his vibrant personality and contagious laughter that lit up every room. Despite seeking help and expressing his intentions clearly, Callum fell through every safety net. He repeatedly communicated his inability to keep himself safe, yet the system failed him at every turn.

A Plea for Change

Vicki's heartbreaking recount of her son's story sheds light on the critical need for a more effective mental health support system. As she mourns the loss of Callum, she hopes that his tragic experience will serve as a catalyst for systemic change to prevent further devastating losses.
