MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) - A man was shot by Midland Police after wielding a weapon early Monday morning.

The City of Midland says that around 2:00 a.m. on Monday, October 7, MPD Officers responded to a call about an individual reportedly walking around with a firearm near the intersection of Lamesa Road and Illinois Avenue.

Officials report that upon arrival, officers encountered a shirtless man in the middle of the roadway, visibly holding a gun.

Despite repeated commands from law enforcement to drop the weapon, the suspect refused to comply, police said.

In response to the escalating situation and the potential threat to public safety, an officer discharged a single round, striking the suspect in the leg, according to MPD.

Officials say that the suspect was medically treated and then taken into custody.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing and is being conducted by the Texas Rangers.
