From Struggles to Success: DRS Graduate Maximizes Scholarship Opportunity

Several major themes emerge when talking to Jackson Kincade 'Cade' Barton, a recent graduate of Davidson River School. Focusing on Self-Improvement
Barton, the recipient of a Connestee Falls Student Scholarship, is driven by a desire for self-improvement. He is dedicated to constant learning, delving into languages, theology, and philosophy. Moreover, Barton harbors a burning passion to support young individuals, particularly those grappling with personal challenges.
"I want to stand by them because they often lack someone to champion their cause," he stated.
Breaking Barriers
Barton holds the distinction of being the first college attendee in his family and the sole high school graduate on one side of his lineage. Starting this fall at Blue Ridge Community College, he aims to pursue social work. His long-term aspiration is to attain an advanced degree enabling him to assist others as a clinical psychologist.
"I am extremely thankful," Barton expressed upon receiving a $1,000 award through the Connestee Falls Student Scholarship Program.
Overcoming Adversity
Reflecting on his past challenges, Barton candidly recounted his transfer to DRS from Brevard High School in his senior year due to chronic absenteeism. The disruption caused by the fluctuation between in-person and remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, alongside other distressing episodes, initiated a downward spiral leading to his departure from Brevard High School.
"The lack of consistency was distressing," he highlighted regarding the constant shifts between in-person and remote learning.
Discovering Resilience
Barton recognized an interview with a Holocaust survivor during 8th grade as a pivotal moment that reframed his perspective on attending DRS. Encouraged by the survivor's positivity despite harrowing experiences, Barton embraced the school's emphasis on smaller class sizes and personalized attention, catering to individuals at risk of not graduating from a traditional high school environment.
Support System
Acknowledging the pivotal role played by his counselor Jaime Dulberg and teacher Sara Smith, Barton expressed gratitude for their unwavering belief in him. Their advocacy enabled Barton to enroll in and complete an A.P. psychology course successfully. Furthermore, Barton commended Rik Emaus from TC Strong for his steadfast support and guidance in aiding fellow students.
"Every individual at DRS has a compelling narrative imbued with intense emotions," Barton remarked.
Empowering Others
By acquiring a mental health certification through TC Strong, Barton leveraged his experiences to champion the cause of other DRS students via 'Voice of the Students.' His resilience and empathy manifest in his dedication to using personal struggles as a stepping stone to support others. The Connestee Falls Student Scholarship Program plays a crucial role in bolstering students like Barton on their educational odyssey for the greater good.
