The PlayStation Vita exclusive title, Freedom Wars, is getting a second chance at success with a remastered version set to release on current platforms early next year.
New Release on Multiple Platforms
Originally developed by Dimps and published by Sony in 2014, Bandai Namco will now be handling the publishing duties for the remastered port of this action-packed game. The game is set to launch on Switch, PS5, PS5, and PC (Steam) on 10th January 2025.
Reimagined Dystopian Future
Freedom Wars is set in a distant dystopian future where pollution has ravaged the planet, and humanity is confined to massive prisons known as Panopticons. In this anime-inspired world, merely existing is considered a sin. Players will navigate this world and battle enemies utilizing unique weapons called Thorns, which offer fluid movement and the ability to subdue foes. The game also boasts both local and online multiplayer modes, allowing for both cooperative and competitive play for up to eight players.
Enhancements and Additions
The remastered version will come with several enhancements, including 4K resolution, upgraded textures, 60fps performance (on PlayStation and PC), a revamped weapon crafting system, additional difficulty settings, and more. Even though Freedom Wars was previously released worldwide, it found the most success in Japan, where it achieved the second-highest opening sales for a Vita game. However, the game received mixed reviews, with Eurogamer criticizing its controls and monotonous environments. Despite its flaws, the remastered version aims to give more players the opportunity to experience this unique title.
Conclusion
The decision to remaster Freedom Wars 11 years after its original release may seem unconventional, but it presents a fresh opportunity for the game to shine on new platforms. With improved features and the chance for a wider audience to explore its dystopian world, Freedom Wars Remastered could be the second wind that this PlayStation Vita exclusive deserves.
