A South Carolina death row inmate became the first person to be executed in the state for 13 years on Friday.

Freddie Owens was put to death by lethal injection at Broad River Correctional Institution shortly before 7 p.m.

Owens made no final statement, but simply said "bye" to his lawyer when the drug was administered while strapped to a gurney with his arms stretched to his sides, according to the Associated Press.

He was on death row for the 1997 murder of a convenience store worker in Greenville, South Carolina, during a robbery.
