Florida to Double Funding and Provide New Equipment to Combat Cancer Among Firefighters

Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis has announced plans to increase funding in an effort to combat the high rates of cancer among firefighters in the state. According to the Centers for Disease Control, cancer is a leading cause of death among firefighters, with research indicating they may face a higher risk compared to the general population.

New Equipment to Fight Cancer

One of the key initiatives to address this issue is the introduction of new equipment designed to de-contaminate carcinogens present on firefighters' gear. This includes the implementation of an 'extractor,' which functions as a specialized heavy-duty washing machine to remove chemicals and carcinogens from uniforms. St. Johns County Fire Rescue has already allocated over $32,000 in de-contamination grants to support this effort.

Impact on Firefighters

The significance of this funding and equipment upgrade was highlighted by Lieutenant Justin Dailey, a firefighter battling brain cancer. Dailey expressed his gratitude to Mr. Patronis for his unwavering support of first responders in Florida, acknowledging the importance of measures such as the cancer presumptive bill and funding for prevention. He emphasized the value of meaningful work and commended Patronis for his dedication to this cause.

State Support for Fire Stations

Since 2020, the state has distributed more than $2.4 million in de-contamination grants to various fire stations, further underscoring its commitment to protecting the health and well-being of firefighters across Florida.

In light of these developments, Florida's proactive approach to addressing cancer risks among firefighters serves as a testament to the state's dedication to prioritizing the safety and welfare of those who bravely serve their communities.
