Florida Faces Another Hurricane, Heavy Rain Threat

The National Hurricane Center said Saturday morning that a tropical depression had formed in the Gulf of Mexico.

It's expected to become Tropical Storm Milton soon, and could strengthen into a hurricane by Monday as it moves across the Gulf towards the Florida peninsula.

The NHC says the system could bring heavy rain to much of Florida late this weekend through the middle of next week.

Areas of Florida are already soaked from Hurricane Helene which hit the state just over a week ago.

Forecasters also warn of the possibility of rapid intensification, and the system could be at or near major hurricane strength as it approaches landfall.

The National Weather Service in Slidell said local land impacts are not expected for southeast Louisiana and south Mississippi, though residents should continue to watch for updates.
