Fernie's Funnel Cakes 55-Year Legacy: A Sweet Texas Tradition at the State Fair

Sisters Continue Their Mother's Legacy at The State Fair of Texas

A Family Tradition

The iconic Fernie's Funnel Cakes is celebrating 55 years at The State Fair of Texas, carrying on the legacy of their parents who started the business in 1969. Christi Erpillo and her sister, Johnna McKee, have been working tirelessly to maintain the family business and uphold the traditions set by their mother, Wanda 'Fernie' Winter.

Hard Work and Dedication

The duo runs Winter Family Concessions LLC, which is known for serving the perfect funnel cake that has become a staple at the fair. Despite the long hours and hard work, they take pride in creating the best funnel cakes and ensuring that every guest leaves satisfied with their sweet treats.

Preserving Family Values

Erpillo and McKee learned from their parents to never compromise on quality and to always put their hearts into everything they do. They continue to follow these principles by ensuring that only the best ingredients are used and that each funnel cake is made with love and care.

Honoring a Legacy

Although Fernie passed away in 2021, her presence is still felt at the family's business. The sisters pay tribute to their mother by setting up her special table every year and offering the original nachitos that started it all for $5 in celebration of their 55 years at the fair.

Looking to the Future

As they celebrate their past achievements, the sisters are also looking toward the future. They have added new items to the menu, such as the Fernie's GOAT funnel cake, to continue innovating and growing the business. With the next generation already showing interest in continuing the legacy, Fernie's Funnel Cakes is poised to remain a beloved tradition at The State Fair of Texas for years to come.
