Empowering Students in the Canary Islands: SUC Training Program Impacts Over 700 Students in First Aid and Cardiac Massage

More than 700 students in the Canary Islands have recently benefitted from a comprehensive training program conducted by the Emergency Service (SUC) under the Ministry of Health. Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, students from Primary and Secondary schools, vocational training courses, and universities in the health field received essential training in first aid and cardiac massage.

Interactive Workshops
Healthcare coordinators organized workshops at fourteen educational centers in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, reaching 470 students. The practical training offered insights into the operations of SUC, including the workings of 112 Canary Islands emergency rooms, ambulances, helicopters, and the medicalised plane.

Empowering Students
Primary school students in the final cycle of education were equipped with first aid knowledge and tips for emergency situations, while over 300 Secondary school students learnt crucial life-saving techniques such as cardiac massage. Specific vocational training programs focused on managing health emergencies, air medical transport, and first aid for students with special needs.

Real-life Experiences
Students also had the opportunity to visit healthcare resources, including the SUC ambulance base in Valverde and various ambulance bases in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Nearly 200 students witnessed firsthand the vital role of urgent and non-urgent health transport resources, Mobile Disaster Units (UMCAT), and Immediate Health Response Teams (ERSI).

This comprehensive training program not only equipped students with essential life-saving skills but also provided them with valuable insights into the healthcare system's operations in emergency situations, empowering the youth of the Canary Islands to make a difference in their communities.
