Empowering Students Through Life Skills

Twister Brews
initiative at Purvis Middle School has been a game-changer for special education students, providing them with a platform to hone their work and social skills. Led by Elizabeth Stover, the special education class meticulously prepares and delivers food and beverages, including coffee, sweet tea, and breakfast burritos, across the campus. Principal Brandi Twillie commended the students' ability to independently manage orders using a Google form, showcasing their growth and development in communication and teamwork.

Building a Small Community Within the Class

According to Stover, the project not only imparts practical skills such as handling money and providing change but also fosters a sense of community within the class. Students learn to collaborate, communicate, and interact with their peers, preparing them for real-world experiences and interactions beyond the school premises. Twillie highlighted the students' enthusiasm for the weekly task, as they eagerly anticipate serving their 'regulars' and take pride in their responsibilities.

Self-Sustaining Project with a Purpose

Moreover, Twister Brews operates as a self-sustaining project, with all earnings dedicated to funding supplies and organizing field trips for the special education class. The initiative not only equips students with practical skills but also instills a sense of ownership and purpose, motivating them to actively participate and engage in the learning process. Twister Brews has proven to be a valuable platform for empowering special education students and promoting inclusive practices within the school community, creating a supportive environment for all learners.
