Exploring Emotions Through Art
Entitled 'Conversations with Color,' the exhibit showcases Theresa Bates' intuitive and expressive paintings, brimming with emotion and movement. With a career spanning over 30 years, Bates has been imparting her knowledge of painting, drawing, and mixed media to students of all ages at the Katonah Art Center since 1998.
Language of Color
Bates views color as a form of language in her paintings, a way to communicate emotions and ideas. Her palettes serve as a true reflection of her innermost expressions. She believes in the simplicity of compositions to allow the colors to truly shine. Bates states, "I find less is more in any good conversation. It's the constant play of speaking and listening."
Inviting Interpretation
As a colorist, Bates hopes that viewers can connect with the wordless communication in her artwork or at least glean a message that speaks to them personally. Each piece invites the observer on a unique journey, stimulating introspection and reflection.
Artistic Journey
Bates has exhibited her work in various galleries in Manhattan and Westchester, with five solo shows since 2020. Her art has found homes in collections across the U.S. and Europe, showcasing the global appeal of her creativity.
Personal Touches
Having moved to Connecticut in 2017 from Westchester, Bates currently resides in Roxbury, where she continues to find inspiration in nature and family. She indulges in travel, hiking, and cherishing precious moments with her grandchildren.
