Culinary Stars Shine Bright: $10,000 Awarded to Boost Businesses Amidst Challenges

Greater Washington Urban League’s By Our Hands recently hosted an award ceremony where eight culinary talents were granted $10,000 each to help sustain their businesses in the face of economic challenges. The event, held on September 21, carried a powerful message of unity and support, emphasizing that together, we can overcome any obstacle.
Community Support for Business Growth
Furard Tate, the executive director of entrepreneurship at the Greater Washington Urban League, highlighted the importance of communal support for businesses and its ripple effect on society. He stressed, 'When we sustain our food business, we sustain our community in so many ways. It brings us together and helps us to elevate so that we can change the world.'
Emotional Acceptance Speeches
Many recipients of the award, such as Oluwatoyin Pyne of Power Foods and Oluwatobi Osobukola of Fritters and Roast, expressed their gratitude with tears in their eyes. Pyne, in her heartfelt acceptance speech, acknowledged the invaluable support from the nonprofit in keeping her faith alive during challenging times. Similarly, Osobukola praised the organization for helping her business thrive and expand, showcasing Nigerian street food flavors in multiple locations.
Building Confidence and Business Success
Previous winner Michelle Phipps-Evans, owner of Vickey’s Trinidad & Tobago Kitchen, shared how the $10,000 award she received last year made a significant impact on her business growth and confidence. She emphasized the importance of programs like By Our Hands in providing support and resources to entrepreneurs, especially those in minority communities.
Empowering Culinary Talents
Tate’s mission to raise more funds to support culinary talents like Pyne, Phipps-Evans, and Osobukola aligns with a Stanford University report highlighting the role of entrepreneurship in promoting economic growth and wealth in minority communities. Despite the challenges faced by Black entrepreneurs, programs like By Our Hands aim to provide the necessary support for business success.
Looking Ahead
Phipps-Evans, inspired by her past success, is determined to scale her business further and continue her entrepreneurial journey with confidence. She is seeking additional funding opportunities to expand her reach and impact in the coming years. The event not only celebrates culinary talents but also shines a spotlight on the resilience and determination of business owners in overcoming obstacles and thriving in today’s competitive market.
