Conflict of interest leads to new defense in baby Halo murder trial

Schenectady, NY (WRGB) — The Schenectady mother charged with killing her 10-month-old daughter has received new legal representation.

CBS6 was the only camera in court when Persia Nelson met her new defense attorney Mark J. Sacco who’s agreed to take on the case.

The Schenectady County Public Defenders Office originally represented Nelson in the case but had to recuse themselves due to a conflict of interest.

Nelson is charged with second degree murder, second degree manslaughter, and endangering the welfare of a child after her daughter Halo Brandon was found in a 10-foot drain pipe on the General Electric campus in March 2024.

The child died from hypothermia.

Nelson has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.

The Schenectady County District Attorney’s said in court Wednesday they’re ready to head to trial once the new attorney is familiar with the case.

Nelson’s next court appearance is set for November 20.
