Columbus police officer fired gun during break-in investigation; no one injured

A Columbus police officer fired his gun while responding to a possible break-in Tuesday morning, but no one was injured, a spokesperson said.

Officers responded about 5:20 a.m. to the 40th block of South Burgess Avenue for a report that people entered a boarded-up house. The caller told a 911 dispatcher that they heard banging noises inside the property, Columbus police spokeswoman Jennifer Watson said.

One officer discharged his firearm during the investigation, but Watson didn't specify whether the shot was accidental or intentional.

Watson did not release the officer's name. Columbus police said the matter remains under investigation.
