Cohoes Library Summer Reading Kickoff Attracts Community with Fun-Filled Activities

The Cohoes Public Library recently hosted its much-awaited Summer Reading Kickoff at Van Schaick Park, drawing in a crowd of eager readers and community members. Ray LeMay, the new library director, expressed his enthusiasm, stating that the event aimed to engage and excite individuals about the upcoming summer reading program. This initiative, running until August 17, encourages participants to either sign up for the program or obtain a library card.

Unlike traditional sign-up events, the library's Summer Reading Kickoff featured an array of engaging activities, including face painting, a bouncy house, Stewart's ice cream, lawn games, and even an impressive hot air balloon open for exploration.

Alongside the fun-filled festivities, two raffles were held during the event. One raffle, organized by the Friends of Cohoes Library, offered exciting prizes, while the library's own raffle extended the excitement throughout the summer reading challenge. Attendees were not only treated to prizes on Sunday but can also look forward to more rewards at the program's finale on August 17.

This kickoff event marked the beginning of a series of upcoming activities orchestrated by the library. From the highly successful event at Van Schaick Park to the upcoming Comic Con on Saturday, the library is gearing up to provide a multitude of entertainment options for the community.

With the library's impending move to a new location, the focus on community engagement remains paramount. Ray LeMay emphasized the importance of reaching out to the residents of Cohoes by hosting events in public spaces, such as parks, and aligning schedules with popular weekend timings. By proactively connecting with the community, the library aims to establish itself as a pivotal resource accessible to all.

As LeMay aptly stated, "You have to be in the community and you have to be that community library." The success of the Summer Reading Kickoff serves as a testament to the library's commitment to fostering literacy and community spirit in Cohoes. By embracing a proactive approach and going above and beyond to connect with residents, the library is poised to make a lasting impact on the community.
