Two local recreation groups are coming together to celebrate the public acquisition of Marshall Mountain, ensuring that the former ski area remains open to the public. In a recent ceremony, a coalition of local, state, and federal officials, along with nonprofit leaders, marked the official transfer of ownership of Marshall Mountain Park to the joint city and county administration.
Preserving a Community Treasure
This milestone event highlights the collaborative efforts to safeguard the beloved ski area, now repurposed for activities like ski touring and mountain biking, as permanent public lands. Participants from various government entities and conservation organizations participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the area for recreational use.
A Vision Realized
The journey to secure Marshall Mountain's future has been a long one, dating back to its closure in 2003. However, thanks to dedication and advocacy, the park has now become a cornerstone of open spaces in the region, slated for expanded trail systems, youth programs, and potential upgrades such as a 'magic carpet' lift for beginner skiers and snowboarders.
Community Festivities
To honor this achievement, a public celebration will take place at Marshall Mountain this Saturday, featuring a raffle of three iconic pink lift chairs to raise funds for further park enhancements. The festivities, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will include food, ice cream, giveaways, and various activities for attendees.
A Collaborative Effort
The event, organized by Friends of Marshall Mountain in partnership with local cycling groups and conservation organizations, aims to bring awareness to the recreational opportunities available to all residents of Missoula County. Representatives from Montana Alpha Cycling, Missoula Mammoths, and other outdoor organizations will be present at the party, showcasing their support for the park's continued development.
Sponsor Support
The celebration is made possible by generous sponsors like Obos footwear, Bedrock Sandals, and REI, who have contributed to the park's growth and community engagement. Overall, the event serves as a tribute to the ongoing commitment of stakeholders and community members in transforming Marshall Mountain Park into a shared recreational space for all to enjoy. Jackson Lee, the county's park manager, expressed gratitude for the collective effort in realizing the vision for Marshall Mountain, inviting residents to join in the festivities and celebrate the park's legacy of public stewardship and outdoor enjoyment.
