Buffalo Schools Embrace New Commissary and Restorative Justice Initiatives

The Editorial Board: Buffalo schools right to move ahead with commissary and restorative justice

Buffalo Embraces Progress

Buffalo schools are gearing up for positive changes as they push forward with plans for a new commissary and restorative justice initiatives. The proposed site for the new commissary at 1016-1044 E. Delavan Ave. may still be just a grassy field, but progress is on the horizon.

Healthier Meals for Students

Buffalo schoolchildren can look forward to healthier meals and various improvements as the district takes steps to enhance their overall well-being. Delayed but not deterred, the Buffalo School Board has given Superintendent Tonja M. Williams Knight the green light to start lease negotiations with McGuire Development.

Moving Past Delays

The journey to this point has been riddled with unnecessary delays and unwarranted contention. However, the Buffalo School Board's decision to proceed with the new food preparation facility signals a positive shift in the right direction. Collaborating with McGuire Development and Kideney Architects, promising designs for the new commissary have already been crafted.

A Community-Centered Approach

The board is actively seeking a community benefit agreement to ensure that the new facility benefits the surrounding neighborhoods. It also aims to promote diversity in construction and hiring practices, with a focus on empowering minority- and women-owned businesses.

Restorative Justice Initiatives

In addition to the commissary project, Buffalo Public Schools are also addressing disciplinary issues through a collaboration with the Erie County Restorative Justice Coalition. This nonprofit organization advocates for conflict resolution through face-to-face accountability sessions, shifting away from punitive measures like suspensions.

Empowering School Staff

The Coalition will provide training in restorative practices to school staff at various elementary schools, emphasizing the importance of fostering a more inclusive and supportive disciplinary system throughout the district.

Paving the Way for Future Success

These initiatives reflect the ongoing progress and commitment to positive change within Buffalo schools. By embracing innovative solutions and community engagement, Buffalo Public Schools are setting the stage for a brighter future for students and the broader community.
