Baldwin Man Arrested After Allegedly Assaulting, Robbing 72-Year-Old Taxi Driver

Defendant James Ely, 23, is charged with Robbery 3rd degree.

The Third Squad reports the arrest of a Baldwin man for a robbery that occurred on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at 3:15 a.m. in East Meadow.

According to Detectives, a 72-year-old male victim was working as a driver for Hub Taxi when he was dispatched to pick a customer at Nassau County Medical Center. When the defendant, James Ely, 23, of 2765 Park Avenue, entered the victim’s vehicle he was informed how much the fare would be and that it was required prior to the transport, he became irate. 

The victim exited the vehicle and was followed by the defendant. Defendant Ely then poured an unknown liquid on the victim, punched him in the head and chest and took his cell phone from him. Third precinct officers were called to the scene and located the defendant who was hiding behind Mavis Discount Tires, located at 2250 Hempstead Turnpike. He was placed under arrest without further incident.

Defendant James Ely is charged with Robbery 3rd degree. He will be arraigned on Thursday, September 19, 2024 at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.
