SEMRHI, Mississippi SHINE Project shine light on Hispanic community

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - In an effort to promote health and wellness within the Hattiesburg-area Hispanic community, two prominent organizations, Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative (SEMRHI) and the Mississippi SHINE Project, joined forces to host the third annual Hispanic Festival at Eastside Park. The event, which took place on Saturday, featured a variety of free health screenings to address prevalent issues such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.

Encouraging Healthy Choices and Community Engagement

Shanell Williamson, community engagement manager for the Mississippi SHINE project and community health worker for Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative, emphasized the importance of educating individuals on the significance of monitoring their health numbers and making informed dietary decisions. The festival not only provided access to essential screenings but also offered a vibrant atmosphere with food stalls and engaging activities for children.

Supporting the Hispanic Community

Edith Fuentes, a community health worker at SEMRHI, highlighted the inclusive nature of the event, stating that while it was open to all community members, the focus remained on supporting the health needs of the Hispanic population. The presence of translators in the health centers ensured that language barriers did not hinder individuals from seeking necessary healthcare services. Various vendors were on site to offer valuable information regarding insurance options and other health-related concerns, further enhancing the community's access to vital resources. The festival's success in fostering unity and well-being among attendees underscores the significance of collaborative efforts in promoting public health and cultural inclusivity.
