It's just about that time of year to start planning the annual trip to the South Hills of Idaho to hunt for the Christmas tree that will signify the holiday through the final days of 2024. There are some essential things that you'll need to bring with you to ensure an afternoon of merriment among family and friends.
Sadly, I haven't taken a trip to the mountains of southern Idaho to pick out the family tree in a couple of years. I used to take on the adventure with my wife's family and always had a great time, but unfortunately, schedules and other realities of life have resulted in fewer gatherings in the hills.
Whatever you do, don't get caught by your kids unprepared like Clark Griswold in Christmas Vacation.
For those of you who are planning a return to the great Idaho backcountry for tree-scouting purposes in the coming days and weeks, allow me to offer some advice that might make your trip easier and more enjoyable. The first thing to prepare for is of course the drive out which always includes snow and slick road conditions.
You'll need to begin with the essentials for travel. Make sure to bring some extra gasoline in case you're packing the generator and plan to make a day of it. I don't think I've ever made the trip and not seen someone assisting a stuck motorist, so a tow cable is a must for those who own powerful trucks. Shovels and tire chains aren't a bad idea just in case.
Saws, warm drinks, food to barbeque (we always brought fried chicken), cornhole or other outdoor games, firearms for some target practice, portable speakers for Christmas music, blankets, gloves, a change of clothes (especially socks), and don't forget the family dog(s), as they might look forward to the outing more than anyone.
Whatever you do, don't get caught by your kids unprepared like Clark Griswold in Christmas Vacation. Have fun and be safe!
