A Texas dad accused of running over and killing the mother of his one-year-old child will keep his parental rights ahead of his trial, say reports.
Earlier this year, cops say Ulise DeLao intentionally hit and struck a 27-year-old woman, Brittany Torres, who was standing outside the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene and DeLao was arrested for 'intoxication manslaughter.'
As the 28-year-old father awaits his trial, court records have shown that Randall County Court Judge James W. Anderson threw out an attempt by the victim’s mom to terminate his parental rights on Monday.
Law&Crime reports that the civil case sought to end his parental rights and allow Torres’ mom, Jaqueline Sanchez, to become the little boy’s legal guardian. It comes after the brutal killing left the toddler's mom dead after being struck by a vehicle.
Canyon Police Department said of the incident in a statement: "On May 27, 2024, at approximately 1:05am, the Canyon Police Department was dispatched to a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in the 1900 block of 10th Ave.
"During the investigation, officers learned Ulise DeLao, age 28, struck Brittany Torres, age 27, while Torres was standing outside of the vehicle. Torres was pronounced dead at the scene.
"DeLao has been arrested for Intoxication Manslaughter. The crash is still under investigation by the Canyon Police Department." After being arrested and charged he was later indicted by a jury on one count of manslaughter.
Security footage of the incident allegedly shows DeLao physically drag Torres out from inside a truck on two occasions, says a report from KVII. He is alleged to have ran down the woman in front of the home they shared, leading to her death.
After police questioning, he is reported to have admitted to running Torres over. He was said to have been released from detention in October after a judge ordered his bond be reduced by half from $500,000 to $250,000.
In a GoFundMe page launched in the wake of the death well-wishers said: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the tragic story of our beloved Brittany, a bright and beautiful story taken from us far too soon. Brittany was a vibrant 27 year old woman, full of life, dreams, and kindness.
