TOWN OF RUSSELL, New York (WWNY) - One person is dead after a fire destroyed a home in St. Lawrence County Monday morning.
St. Lawrence County Emergency Services Director Matt Denner says passersby saw flames coming from a house at 4371 County Route 24 in the town of Russell.
Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 5 a.m. and found the home engulfed in flames.
Denner says deputies were the first ones there and tried to enter the house to see if anyone was inside. They had to turn back because of the smoke and flames, he said.
Volunteers from Russell, Canton, Pierrepont and DeGrasse fire departments battled the fire.
Denner says an adult in the house died. The person’s name has not been released.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Denner says it does not appear to be suspicious.
