According to PEOPLE, Sheriff KP Gibson stated that Robertson is thought to have been the gunman, but he was unable to provide any insight into the apparent motivation behind the murders.

The deaths were discovered at around 7 p.m., according to the police, and the couple was enroute to Mamou. According to the school's Facebook page, Ardoin attended Mamou High School, which was having its homecoming that evening. The couple's travel itinerary suggests that they may have been on their way to homecoming festivities.

Austin Bellard, a resident of Branch, claims to have been close to the scene when the grisly shooting happened. “A truck pulled up right across the street, happens all the time, literally every single day,” Bellard said. “It wasn’t a truck that I normally seen, but it didn’t look out of place either, they pulled up and I heard a couple of gunshots, didn’t really think anything of it.”

Bellard reported hearing gunfire from a pickup that pulled up close to a location along White Oak Highway. He claimed he hurried to the scene to observe the situation and discovered something unsettling.

“The man that owns the land came out here,” Bellard said. “I went meet him before the cops showed up, and it was just me, him, and my dad out there. I don’t really want to tell you what I saw. It wasn’t good.”

The young woman's death is being grieved by Mamou High School and the Town of Mamou. "Dashayla will always be remembered for her courage and bravery, her kind heart, and her beautiful smile. She was so very loved and will be dearly missed." Robertson was a local DJ, according to his Facebook page. Two months ago, Robertson posted a picture of himself and Ardoin on Instagram with the comment, "Me & You Against The World."
