GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Valley News Live) - A Grand Forks State Senator is apologizing for things he said to his political opponent, in the upcoming general election.

Kyle Thorson, who is running for a state senate position as a democrat in Grand Forks, says he received what he believes were threatening messages from current state Senator, Scott Meyer. One message says, “Regardless how this election ends, you’ve picked a fight; this won’t end November 5th.”

In an interview with Valley News Live, Senator Meyer said:

“I had an error in judgement in the heat of a campaign. I had a couple too many to drink that night and I got online and my emotions were high I had read a few negative things about me and jumped in. It wasn’t right, it wasn’t the right thing to do and I’m better than that. I’ve apologized to Kyle and I’m willing to meet with him if he so chooses and I understand if he cares to not talk to me he didn’t deserve that.”

Meyer told Valley News Live that he owns his mistake, and says he needs to be better.

“I’m not afraid to stand up for things that are right and there’s a way to do it and I didn’t do it right this time. It’s just got to be better I’ve owned it I’ve taken accountability on it.” Meyer says.

Meyer’s comments came to light after Thorson noted challenges with the final push towards Election Day.

Thorson says a message was also sent to his campaign page saying “special forces” know about Thorson, attached with a picture of military personnel holding a gun.

“At the end of the day, political violence has no place in our society at all, and I don’t really know what caused him to send all of this. My suspicion is because I’ve been calling him out for his votes last session, which I don’t agree with, which is just what politics is!” Thorson says.
