The Choice Program at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County is the latest youth group to be recognized with honor rows from the Baltimore Ravens.
The organization recently hosted fun and games at its Choice Fall Fest in Cherry Hill.
"This is an event we do every year to try to give back to the community and connect with the community and hear from them, (and make) improvements they want to see made in their community," said Eric Ford, the executive director of The Shriver Center at UMBC.
The Choice Program at UMBC hosts all kind of activities, including games, crafts, face-painting, haircuts and even music with neighbors, mentors and mentees.
"We're here to build community. We're here to see people come out, enjoy hanging out with each other on a beautiful Saturday morning," said Benis Mumezerr, a staff member with The Choice Program.
The program was founded in 1987 with a mission to strengthen communities through innovative, family-focused strategies that connect youth to opportunities for positive choices — and everyone is happy to be a part of something bigger than themselves.
"I feel like it's helpful to help other people in need," said Zenither Collins, 15.
The program's largest and longest-standing partner is the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. The Choice Program is dedicated to college, career and civic readiness as keys to positive youth development.
"The narrative about youth in Baltimore particularly being violent, dangerous, lazy, whatever it says, that's not true," Ford told 11 News. "If you give them an opportunity, that whole notion of 'You build it, they will come,' so if you give them that opportunity and maybe provide some incentive, then they will show up."
The Choice Program has served more than 500 young people and their families over the last year and completed more than 1,900 community service hours.
