FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - A 33-year-old man was taken into custody after he led police on a high-speed pursuit Wednesday night.
Cantrell James is facing several charges, including resisting law enforcement and felony possession of a handgun.
Police say detectives with the Gang & Violent Crimes Unit were in the 2000 block of Carterton Drive around 8 p.m. Wednesday when an officer spotted James, who was known to have an active warrant. Officers attempted a traffic stop on James’ vehicle; however, the suspect quickly drove away, leading to a police pursuit.
According to FWPD officers, after deploying tire deflation devices on James’ car, he eventually left his vehicle and fled on foot. While fleeing, police say the suspect dropped two pistols. A release from the department states that detectives also found cocaine in the car.
Officers say James was eventually taken into custody after a “short struggle” facing the following preliminary charges:
- Two counts of level 5 felony prohibited person in possession of a handgun.
- Resisting law enforcement level 5 felony (previous conviction)
- Possession of cocaine
- Possession of marijuana
